Digital Tombstone, Anyone?

Yesterday I was thinking about tombstone epitaphs – how passé.

Instead of static words on stone, you can now get a multimedia presentation of your life on your memorial for family and friends to enjoy during visits to your gravesite. These digital headstones have been out for a while, apparently. There’s one called the ‘Serenity Panel’ that is powered by solar energy no less, so it’s a ‘green’ option.

It doesn’t seem like these digital tributes are selling like hotcakes though, since I’ve never seen one in any cemetery that I’ve visited (and I’ve visited quite a few). But by no means am I an expert on what’s selling like hotcakes, so here are some pros and cons to consider before purchasing a digital headstone:

PROS

  • Visitors get to see you when you were alive and (presumably) happy.
  • Visitors get to hear your (recorded) voice again.
  • Visitors get to say they’ve seen solar energy work.

CONS

  • Visitors get to see you when you were alive and (presumably) happy.
  • Whoever pays for this – you or your family – must cough up extra $$. Technology isn’t free, after all.
  • Visitors get to say they’ve seen solar energy not working (only valid on overcast days and during winter).

Anyway, variety is the spice of life so a digital headstone will appeal to certain folks. Just make sure that if you want something like this on your memorial,  plan ahead so you can customize your lifestory exactly how you want.

Have you ever seen a digital headstone?
